Blended from Central American Arabica to resemble Jamaican Blue Mountain, this coffee is sweet and malty with hints of caramel and toffee.

Description:

Drip Brew Special started life as our filter coffee. We wanted a blend with the smooth, sweet character people love in Jamaican Blue Mountain, at a much more sensible price. It's sweet and malty, with caramel and toffee notes and a clean, satisfying finish that makes it an easy coffee to drink all day.

Add milk and the caramel and toffee come forward even more, mostly thanks to the Costa Rican beans in the blend. And although we made it for filter, it turned out to make a very good espresso too.

What's in the blend

Drip Brew Special is 100% Arabica, in equal parts from three origins:

  • Brazil for body and a nutty sweetness
  • Colombia for balance and caramel
  • Costa Rica for the clean finish and the toffee notes that milk brings out

At a glance

  • Roast: medium
  • Tasting notes: sweet malt, caramel, toffee
  • Body: medium
  • Best for: filter, pour-over, batch brewers and cafetière, also good as espresso

How to brew it

  • Pour-over (V60 or similar): 15g of medium-fine coffee to 250ml of water at about 94°C. Pour 30ml first and let it bloom for 30 seconds, then pour the rest slowly in circles. Aim to finish in about three minutes.
  • Filter machine: about 60g of coffee per litre of water. Adjust up or down by 5g to suit your taste.
  • Cafetière: 15g of coffee to 250ml of water just off the boil, four minutes, then press.

Our ground option is ground for cafetière, which also works in most filter machines. For pour-over or espresso, choose whole beans and grind them fresh. If you're choosing between methods, our comparison of pour-over and drip brew may help.

The Blue Mountain question

Jamaican Blue Mountain is famous for being mild, smooth and very expensive. Drip Brew Special isn't Blue Mountain and doesn't pretend to be. It's our own blend, built to hit a similar style of cup. We wrote more about it in the best Jamaican Blue Mountain alternative.
